Palanga Stadium – home of the Lithuanian Athletics Championship for at least five years

Last weekend, the Lithuanian Athletics Championships were held in Palanga for the tenth time, where the country’s most capable athletes competed. The participants of the championship achieved impressive results – discus thrower Mykolas Alekna made the fourth best throw of his career (72.15 m), runner Gabija Galvydytė fulfilled the World Championship standard (800 m – 1 minute 58.69 seconds), and sprinter Ema Rupšytė demonstrated the third result in the history of Lithuania (100 m – 11.37 seconds).

It is good news that the Lithuanian Athletics Championships will continue to take place in Palanga in the summer. On the first day of August, the Lithuanian Athletics Federation (LLAF) signed an agreement with the Palanga City Municipality. According to it, the national championships will be organized in Palanga for at least five years.

“Palanga will be the capital of the Lithuanian championships for at least five years. The municipality has done a great job and, in accordance with our recommendations, has completely renovated the stadium – it has renovated the running tracks and sectors. It is the first athletics stadium in the country that meets our expectations in terms of quality. It can certainly be compared to high-quality stadiums in other European countries, which is especially important in order to achieve the highest results,” said Eimantas Skrabulis, President of LLAF.

“This is a great appreciation for our city. Athletes feel great here not only because of the excellent infrastructure, but also because of the special atmosphere, nature and the support of the spectators. It is important for us to ensure the highest level of conditions – that is why we continue to invest in sports,” Palanga City Mayor Šarūnas Vaitkus wrote on his Facebook account.

This summer, a new “Conica” surface was laid in the Palanga stadium, which meets international standards. According to the President of the LLAF, the best reflection of the renovated sports facility is the results of the athletes and the feedback from the community: “We are happy with the cooperation and expect excellent results in the long term. We are already hearing a lot of good feedback from coaches, athletes, spectators. The city of Palanga has done a great job.”
