On Thursday in Belgrade (Serbia), in the bronze competition of the World Athletics continental tour, the high jumper Juozas Baikštys put on a show. The athlete not only won a convincing victory (the runner-up was overtaken by nine centimeters), but also repeated his personal record – 2.27 m.
The Lithuanian overcame the heights of 2.05 m, 2.08 m, 2.11 m, 2.14 m, 2.16 m, 2.18 m, 2.24 m, 2.27 m in the first attempts, and 2.20 m and 2.22 m in the second attempts. J. Baikštys did not rise to such a height for four years, and the achieved result brought a direct roadmap to the European Championships to be held in Birmingham (Great Britain) next year.
The norm for the World Championships to be held in Tokyo (Japan) next month is 2.33 m. Discus thrower Mykolas Alekna and middle-distance runner Gabija Galvydytė have a guaranteed ticket to the Far East, and the qualification system is open until August 25. The Lithuanian high jump record since 1991 belongs to Rolandas Verkis (2.34 m).
