Discus thrower Mykolas Alekna was elected the best athlete of 2025 at the prestigious Lithuanian Sports Awards. The athlete started the year by impressively improving the world record – his discus flew as much as 75.56 m. At the end of the season, the athlete’s chest was decorated with the second World Championship silver medal in his career.

Accepting the fourth Athlete of the Year award in his career, M. Alekna thanked the team: “My team is the reason why I have received this award for many years. They give a lot, I wouldn’t be here without them,” the athlete said on stage.

Mykolas’ coach Mantas Jusis was nominated as the Coach of the Year, and his brother Martynas Alekna applied for the Breakthrough Statuette of the Year.

The legendary javelin thrower Birutė Kalėdienė was also recognized in these awards – she was awarded the award “For Lifetime Merit”.
